Sports Tourism
September 2, 2005
The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) is enthusiastic in playing host as one of the Provincial Sites of the 23rd South East Asian (SEA) Games. It was in 1991 when the last SEA Games was held in the Philippines . Undeniably this year, everybody, young and old alike, is looking forward to what will ensue to this once in more than a decade international occasion.
Four (4)sports namely Archery, Canoe/Kayak, Sailing and Triathlon will be staged in Subic. Eleven participating countries have already signed up to attend for this enormous event such as, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and of course the Philippines.

About 469 officials and athletes will be in Subic Bay Freeport Zone for the four sports wherein 89 athletes are members of our very own National Team.

As early as May this year, the National Team for the Sailing event is already on training in Subic Bay. The National Team members for the Archery arrives this July according to Dr. Leonora Fe S. Brawner, President of the National Archery Association of the Philippines. This is so for the members to have a home advantage and to acclimatize themselves to the venue. It is expected then that come August, all National Team members for the four sports will be in the Freeport in preparation for the SEA Games while some of the foreign participants will also be seen practicing around the area.

This will not be made possible without the Philippine Sea Games Organizing Committee (PHILSOC) on top of it all. Just last June 22, 2005, the Memorandum of Agreement was signed by no less than PHILSOC Chairman and CEO Sec. Roberto Pagdanganan and SBMA Chairman Francisco H. Licuanan III witnessed by the Philsoc Secretary General, Mr. Stephen C. Hontiveros and SBMA Deputy Administrator for Administration, Mr. Ramon De Leon. Other officials who also acted as witness were Hon. Francisco J. Elizalde from the International Olympic Committee and Mr. Kenneth Peralta, SBMA Tourism Manager.

With the MOA finally signed, Officials of SBMA and its environs will have to give its best effort to the success of the events. SBMA, through Administrator Alfredo C. Antonio, has created its own Committee who is tasked to formulate work plans and implement the same towards a triumphant staging of the SEA

The Committee is composed of DA Ramon De Leon as the Overall Coordinator, Arthur Tanseco as the Vice Coordinator and the Department Managers who shall be members for the four committees such as Secretariat, Support Service, Logistics, and Ways and Means. Said Committee shall work hand in hand with the PHILSOC as to the "nitty gritty" details and requirements necessary for the said event.
